Gender issue in the spiritual life of the Muslims of the North Caucuses

Present article uses the data collected during the summer of 2017 in a course of the large scale survey in the republics of the North Caucasus Federal District of the Russian Federation, namely, the Chechen Republic, the Karachay-Cherkessia Republic, Republics of North Ossetia-Alania, Ingushetia, Dagestan, and Kabardino-Balkaria. The survey was conducted by the North Ossetian department of social research Institute of social and political studies, Russian Academy of Sciences and the department of sociology at the North Ossetian State University. The total number of respondents was 1200, including 30 experts (journalists, scientists, government officials, members of political parties, cultural workers, religious scholars, lawyers). The results demonstrate that in their spiritual life the Caucasians are strongly interested in the gender aspect. A high coefficient of variation of data within a single answer indicates the heterogenous nature of the opinions, which depended on the respondents’ nationality, religion, and place of residence. The experts’ opinions varied as well. For example, experts from Chechnya and Ingushetia, and, to a lesser extent, Dagestan, emphasized the importance of religion in their respective regions. The experts from North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, and, to a lesser extent, Karachay-Cherkessia spoke about the dominant role of nationalism in their republics. This notion was especially applied to such issue as family creation. The experts of North Ossetia pointed out that the citizens of the republic are indifferent to the issues of Islamic faith, gender segregation, Muslim woman’s dress code, etc. It is worth mentioning, that the experts from Chechnya and Ingushetia expressed a strong sentiment in favor of gender segregation and limited social role of women, prescribed by the Islamic faith.

Key words: marriage ceremony, customs, Islamisation of the population, polygamy, Sharia law, secular law, interfaith marriages, religious life, regional gender policy, gender equality, Muslim institutions, equality.

The modern look of the violin in the work of composers of the twentieth century

The violin works by composers of the 20th century are considered in article; in these works violin is treated nonconventionally, and its sound image appears modern, unusual, and new. Authors not just expand a range of expressive qualities of a violin, but represent it differently in the conditions of vanguard compositional techniques from neomodality to polystylistics. Special attention is paid to what new timbre colors are found by vanguard composers and how wide violin’s sound potential is discovered by them. Authors, apparently, reach use of articulations doing sounding of the violin unrecognizable, however the majority, even the most courageous experimenters of the 20th century, nevertheless does not deprive a violin of its "human" sounding image that it was given to it by nature and that so attracted composers and listeners at all times.

Key words: Violin, music of 20th century, vanguard, sound image, expressive qualities.
