Isaac Newton’s eschatological thoughts and Jewish dispersion
The problem of the connection between eschatological calculations of famous English scientist and theologian Isaac Newton with the Jewish dispersion, is investigated. The significant role of Newton’s special interpretation of the Book of Daniel is stressed in the creation of the chronology system of Jewish dispersion and re-creation of the State of Israel. It is demonstrated that Newton’s eschatological exegesis gave a new impetus to the tradition of hermeneutical interpretations of the prophecies. That helped to create a religious and political climate in the 19th-20th centuries, in which three important stages of the Jewish return to Palestine (aliyahs) took place, and the restoration of Israeli statehood was accomplished after 2000 years of dispersion and persecution of the Jews.
Newton proposed a chronology of the Jewish dispersion that should correspond to the biblical prophecies and modern geopolitical realities of Newton’s time. A particularly important place in the theory of Jewish dispersion is occupied by prophetic periods of 1290, 1335 and 2300 years.
Newton’s views of on the “Ten Kingdoms” mentioned in the Book of Daniel, are analysed. According to Newton’s interpretation, they are related to very powerful European monarchies which have arisen on the territory of former Roman Empire. An important condition of the state’s inclusion in Newton’s list of the “Ten Kingdoms” is the descendance of political power directly from the pope or the presence of Christianity persecution on the territory of the state in question.
Newton’s views on the hermeneutic interpretation of the “seven weeks” from the prophecy of Daniel, are studied. According to Newton, they correspond to the Jewish Jubilee and the time that would pass between the call to restore Israel and the restoration itself. This corresponds very well to the real reconstruction of Israel in 1948 and the call of Theodor Herzl to the Jews to return to the Holy Land in 1896.
Key words: Newton, Newtonianism, Israel, Christianity, Anglicanism, Judaism, Jewish nation, eschatology.
