On the issues of church management in Russia in the XVIII century and its reflection in recent historiography

This topic offers a bibliographical essay on Church-State Relations during the Imperial Era. One reason for the paucity of modern researchers on the management of the Russian Orthodox church is the lack of familiarity with this subject’s vast published and unpublished materials. This essay has two goals: first, to determine the bibliographical environment in which some of the aspects of study of modern Russian Orthodoxy were generated; and second, to indicate some of the peculiarities of that environment which in the past misled researchers about the church. Similar works are dissertations dealing with internal Church affairs, such as the education in Orthodoxy and Enlightenment. (Kleymenov V.A., Isakov A.A., Lebedeva N. A.) Others go beyond the Russian frontier and are concerned with the Russian Rascol Society (Mayorov R.A., Pavlova O. A.) and Metropolitan Platon’s position with regard to the Church Architecture. (Robinov O.Y., Putyatin I.V.) Every-years conferences “Platonovskiye chteniia” demonstrates the great need for ecclesiastical and cultural professional cooperation for the studying of Russian church history. We hope that this essay will contribute in some small way toward encouraging young scholars to devote more attention to the study of Russian church history.

Keywords: Soviet scholarship, modern researchers, secular reform, learned monks, orthodoxy enlightenment, church architecture.

Martinkin A.V.

Islam in the Crimea as one of the factors determining the integration of the Crimea in Russian civilization

The author considers the basic civilizational and cultural specifics of Islam spreading and functioning in the Crimea and the north-eastern Black Sea region. According to the author’s opinion, the “peripheral” centers of Islam civilization such as Derbent, Volga Bulgaria, Khwarezm influenced these processes, as well as the adoption of Islam by means of state religion of The Golden Horde (Ulus of Jochi) by Uzbek Khan in 1313. The author focuses his attention on the community of Crimean Tatars and Islamic peoples of Eurasian region.

Keywords: Crimea, spreading of Islam, civilizational and cultural specifics, Muslim peoples, generality of historical destiny, Crimean Tatars.
